How to Remove Medical Collections From Your Credit Report

Medical debt is one of the most common — and most disputable — items on American credit reports. Thanks to major reporting changes in 2023 and 2024, millions of medical collections are no longer allowed to appear on your credit file at all.

Paid medical collections must be deleted, unpaid medical debt cannot report until it is at least a year past due, and medical collections with an original balance under $500 are no longer reported. If one is still showing, pull all three reports, verify it against the rules, and send an FCRA-grounded Section 609 dispute letter.
